We are seeking an experienced COBOL Architect/Team Lead to join our team as a part-time contractor. As a key member of our presales department, you will play a crucial role in advising clients, contributing insights from past projects, and assisting in the preparation of commercial proposals. This position requires deep expertise in COBOL, ERP systems, and modernization strategies, particularly within the manufacturing sector.

About the project

The client is a leading ERP vendor specializing in the manufacturing sector. Our global presence includes headquarters in South Africa and offices in the US, UK, Singapore, and Australia. Led by our Chief Product Engineering Officer, the engineering department is focused on modernizing our ERP system, with a particular emphasis on transitioning to cloud-native architectures and adopting modern agile methodologies

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of commercial proposals, providing technical expertise, solution architecture diagrams, and implementation strategies.
  • Act as a technical advisor during client workshops, providing insights into COBOL modernization strategies, ERP system architecture, and cloud-native solutions.
  • Contribute insights and lessons learned from past COBOL modernization projects, highlighting best practices, challenges, and success stories

Requirements

  • Deep understanding of COBOL programming language, ERP systems (preferably SYSPRO), and modernization strategies.
  • Proven experience in designing and implementing modern cloud-native architectures, microservices, and containerization technologies.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive project success.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot technical challenges and propose innovative solutions.
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies and practices, including Scrum, Kanban, and DevOps.
